The Institute for Peace and Diplomacy hosted a panel discussion titled “China’s Role in the Ukraine-Russia War” on March 15, 2022.
China has not condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, nor has it supported the US-led sanctions by Western countries against Russia. But Beijing has also stated its long support for the UN Charter principles of non-aggression and respect for the territorial integrity of sovereign states. What is the calculation of the Chinese leadership in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine? Will it answer calls from Europe and Ukraine’s President to mediate between Russia and Ukraine and eventually broker a deal that can be accepted by all parties? What are the medium- to long-term implications of the Russia-Ukraine war for China’s relations with the West and its relations with Taiwan?
